Candid Pet Photography

While most of the time I can ask permission to photograph people's pets, in Italy it's a bit more difficult to ask that question verbally, since my Italian consists of my broken Spanish uttered with a faux-Italian accent.

However there's always nonverbal language.

Tip: When in a foreign country and wanting and needing and having to get that great art shot, simple ask the question non-verbally.

1. Hold up your camera so that the person whose attention you're seeking notices it.
2. Point to the pet, kid or any object in their possession that you want to photograph.
3. If they smile and pose, you're on. If they start waving their hands and turn around, forget it.

People in Europe have an affinity for carrying thier animals as if they were just out of the crib. Here are two images, the first one I just can't figure out, because it's just not a cat's nature to be held for long periods of time. Can anyone explain how you train a cat to do this?

  1. Maybe because in the second picture the cat is actually a dog? Or am I missing something here? Anyway: love your work - have put you on my blog roll if you don't mind. And comments on the (amateuristic!) pics I take/publish are always welcome from a pro like yourself... (hope I am not pushing it here :-) ). Keep it up!
